Pennsylvania Update

23 Sep

So after our huge high coming off our 51 mile stretch, we had a couple set backs this week. Tuesday we had planned to “zero” in Stroudburg at a hotel to recover from our big days. However, while driving back from the post office (where we received awesome care packages from my brother Jim and his wife Sherri and Detective Mike- thank you!!!) a tree fell onto Scott’s car while driving 50mph. It cracked the whole driver’s side of the windshield and dented the car as well. The next day and a half were spent

in towing/rental car/insurance purgatory, never getting a solid answer from anyone. Finally Wednesday afternoon we were able to get back on the trail at 5pm, in time to hike a quick 5 miles and set up camp.

Unfortunately our luck hadn’t changed yet. Thursday morning I woke up with intense pain in my right foot. All signs pointed to a possible stress fracture, so we chose to spend the day stationary and see if it improved. We both kept our fingers crossed, knowing that a true lower body injury would be a trail ender. Friday morning came around and it seemed our luck had finally turned. My foot felt better and we were able to hike 15 miles with no increase in pain. We followed that up with 17 miles on Saturday and got to meet my brother Mike for an awesome dinner in Palmerton at a local pub. He dropped us back at the trail at 7pm and we hiked with too-full bellies 0.7miles up a steep trail to a shelter for the night.

This morning we woke up to a beautiful crisp fall day and clear skies. We took off at a good clip and kept it up all day, taking stops for snacks and to enjoy the scenery because we had a short day. After 13 miles and some incredible views we met up with my Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Steve. They scooped us up and took us home to a delicious home-cooked meal (only our second of the trip!) including my family’s famous chocolate cake in cupcake form! They couldn’t be more gracious hosts and my Aunt even gave up her chair so I could elevate my swollen legs. There is nothing as energizing as seeing our loved ones on the trail and we are so appreciative for these visits!
