Saddleback Mountain

18 Jul

Here is the climb up to the summit of Saddleback Mountain today. We have done a TON of climbing these past 3 days. Yesterday we did over 4,000ft in 13.1 miles, ending at Poplar Ridge Lean-to. It poured rain and hailed all night so we were lucky to have 2 spaces inside the shelter! Bear huddle up underneath. This morning we packed up and climbed the whole Saddleback range (3 huge summits). Afterwards we knocked out another 10 miles on tired legs and are at camp right now boiling up some fetticini. Not too shabby!

Care Package

16 Jul

People have been asking what we can use in care packages here are some ideas:
small roll of duct tape
blister bandages (johnson and johnson makes some or any kind)
small bottles of shampoo/conditioner/soap
wet ones

Ziplocs big and small

small bottles of bug spray
small bottles of sunscreen (there is a theme here- we can only find huge containers of things!)
dog treats of the beefy kind
drink mixes (crystal light, propel, gatorade, etc.)

For food treats we love:
Smartfood popcorn
Triscuits
Jelly bellies
Peanut butter m&ms
Fruit snacks (the gummy kind- any variety)

Will post more if we think of more ideas!

Trail Angels

15 Jul

Well, I am a bit bummed and a bit behind. I had a wonderful post going and somehow lost it, so I will start again and hopefully it will be better. Jen, Bear, and I have been on the trail 4 days since our last zero day needed for Bear’s recovery. We had an awesome 20 mile day first day back, then 12, 5, and 5 mi. Short days with some big climbs. This last five mile day was what we call a “nero” day. AT slang for “near zero” so closer to zero miles hiked than twenty. We hiked 5 miles into Stratton and immediately ate burgers and fries. We will stay the night at the hostel here and then head out for a big day.
While eating lunch we spoke of the blog and are excited to get some posts up. So if you will indulge me I am going to back track a bit and speak of some of the wonderful people we met on the trail and to some of our unique experiences thus far.
